Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has stated that the central bank is not considering extending the deadline for exchanging old naira notes with freshly redesigned notes.
Emefiele stated this to journalists in Lagos State on Friday, just hours after President Muhammadu Buhari met with All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to Emefiele, the CBN recognizes the difficulties Nigerians are having in accessing the new naira notes and is striving to close the gaps in the circulation process.
UPDATE: Banks To Start Over-The-Counter Payment Of New Notes
Emefiele stated that the central bank will expand cash swaps to microfinance institutions and hire 30,000 super agents in the hinterlands as part of new efforts to speed the circulation of new naira notes and alleviate scarcity of new naira notes.
According to Emefiele, the CBN is in talks with banks about making alternate channels more accessible and simple for Nigerians.
Remember that the central bank has set February 10 as the new deadline for exchanging outdated naira notes.
The CBN set January 31 as the deadline, however many Nigerians have been unable to obtain the new N200, N500, and N1000 notes, resulting in a scarcity in the country.
