The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will not disturb the 2023 general election, according to Godwin Emiefele, Governor of the central bank.

According to news sources, at a meeting with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, and the other 11 National Commissioners, the CBN chairman assured that the bank would not be the cause of any delays in the upcoming elections.

He said “The CBN will not allow itself to be used as agents to frustrate the fourth coming election which is a positive assignment.

“If you require cash to pay some of your service providers, we will make it available to you. We will not allow ourselves to be seen as agents that frustrate a genuine assignment.”

His suggestion follows the INEC chairman’s request that the apex bank make available the funds required to pay for election logistics.

The INEC chairman informed the CBN governor that the 2023 elections would be the best in Nigerian history, although questions have been raised regarding the processes leading up to the elections.

While the commission has transferred all of its accounts at the state and national levels to the apex bank, Yakubu claims that certain of the services provided to the commission must be paid for in cash.
