The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has disclosed actions it will take if the Bimodal Voter Registration Systems, BVAS, is hijacked by thugs on election day, ahead of the February and March general elections.

Lawrence Bayode, the Commission’s Deputy Director of Information and Communications Technology, stated on Wednesday that the electoral body has a system in place to deactivate any stolen BVAS.

Bayode who spoke on Channels Television’s special election programme added that “if a BVAS is kidnapped, we already have a system in place that can deactivate that particular BVAS.

“The (hoodlums) will not be able to take over the accreditation process since the technology is meant to push accredited voters to the rear end,” he explained.

According to Bayode, if the thugs take the device to another location where they would change the data on the device, the polling unit’s Presiding Officer, PO, will report the occurrence.

“If such a thing happens, the PO reports and from the back-end, that device is deactivated so that the person who took away that device will not be able to do anything with the device,” he said.
