Commercial banks in Abeokuta, Ogun State, have refused to open for business in order to prevent being attacked following violent protests by certain young people about the paucity of fresh naira notes and petrol.

Protesters went on a rampage across the city on Tuesday, attacking banks and their Automated Teller Machines, or ATMs.

One person was shot during a robbery attempt at a Sapon First Bank branch by hoodlums, as demonstrators clashed with police.

Banks also refused to load cash into ATMs, leaving citizens without a way to withdraw money.

According to a banker who did not want his identity printed, the sit-in is indefinite until further notice.

“We are also Nigerians, why [are they] attacking us? We are also going through a lot, even as bankers. We shouldn’t be the target of any protest. As I’m talking to you now, all of us are in our houses until further notice. We cannot come and die,” he said.

Meanwhile, inhabitants of Ogun State are facing increased hardship due to a lack of cash.

Sulaimon, a POS operator in Abeokuta’s Oluwo, blamed the protesters for escalating the situation.

He said: “We used to get some cash on a daily basis before, no matter how small. Now that the banks are not working again, what do we do? We will all suffer for it. We just have to be patient and protest against these problems with our votes.”
