Adolphus Wabara, former Abia Senator and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), has indicated that the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to release Nnamdi Kanu if he replaces President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to news sources, the pro-Biafra agitator has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, when the federal government’renditioned’ him to Nigeria from Kenya.

Despite multiple court rulings directing the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to free the IPOB leader, the current administration has refused to comply.

The PDP chairman urged Abians to vote for the PDP presidential candidate on February 25.

He said: “Atiku has promised to release our son from prison in one hundred days of his administration. He is not afraid of anybody. He will do what he has promised.”

Wabara’s revelation comes only weeks after the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) of the Atiku/Okowa campaign in Anambra State said that if Atiku wins next month’s election, he will grant Kanu unrestricted release.

Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Director-General of the Anambra State PDP-PCC, stated that Atiku would obey the Appeal Court decision ordering Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

He further stated that the PDP presidential candidate would ‘instill permanent peace’ in many sections of the country, particularly the Southeast.

According to him, Atiku is the only candidate who has a strategy for resolving the problem in the South-east for the benefit of the entire area.

He said: “I am saying this with every sense of responsibility that Atiku will grant Nnamdi Kanu unconditional release. That is in Atiku’s agenda for permanent peace in the South-east. In addition, he will also apply political solution to release all those genuine IPOB agitators in detention without trial.

“Atiku’s government will have serious talks with the group and others, with the view to restoring their faith in the country and make them part of the effort for better Nigeria. However, the criminal elements will be dealt with decisively.”
