Atedo Peterside, a leading economist and the head of the Anap Foundation, has endorsed the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Saturday’s election, stating that he (Obi) symbolises a new route for Nigerians.
This declaration was made by the founder of Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc while speaking on Arise TV’s show titled “The 2023 Presidential Election in View.”

“He (Obi) offers a fresh road,” Peterside remarked, explaining why he will vote for LP’s Obi. I like that the new course does not have an absolute majority in the National Assembly because it will prevent the executives from taking ‘nonsense on economic fronts’ to the legislature and having it rubber-stamped by their entire party while harming Nigerians’ interests.

“I prefer an arrangement where nobody controls the parliament. You bring a project for deliberation, it will be approved only if it is based on national interest. So, it’s a new thing,” he stressed.
While fielding questions on the personality and experience of the LP presidential candidate, the foremost economist said he slightly disagreed with people who concluded that Obi has no federal experience because he served on the Economic Management team of former President Goodluck Jonathan for four years with Obi when he was the Anambra State governor.
“Jonathan chose just two governors from the North and South then on merit to join the team. They were Obi and the former Governor of Adamawa State, Admiral Murtala Nyako (retd.).

“So for the four years, all the arguments on power sector reform, fuel subsidy and others, Obi actively partook in them and if he was always on the wrong side on economic matters, I would not have voted for him.
“I believe that there is a new arrangement that he represents and he wants to bring on board with his wealth of economic and governance experience, whether he succeeds is a different matter.

“He brings hope and everybody wants to buy his hope and I want to too.

“If he doesn’t emerge, I will accept it because I’m a democrat,” he maintained.
