The United Nations has urged Nigeria’s political parties and candidates to uphold their end of the bargain.

On Wednesday in Abuja, all 18 political parties signed a peace deal for the 2023 general elections.

The accord, mediated by the National Peace Committee, requires all parties to acknowledge the results of the elections.

In the event of a grievance, it is expected that it will be resolved through legal channels.

Stephane Dujarric, UN Spokeswoman, told the News Agency of Nigeria in New York that the world body welcomes the agreement.

Dujarric said that the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel, UNOWAS, has political engagements.

She added a top official is in contact with the NPC Chair and “ready to leverage good offices to support quiet diplomacy efforts to push key participants to follow their pledges”.

UNOWAS and the Resident Coordinator Office are already in contact with the leading candidates, opposition leadership, and institutions.
