The appeal by the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Democratic Party (PDP) for its Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, to resign has been dismissed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to news sources, Rotimi Lawrence Oyekanmi, the Principal Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, stated this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.

The accusation made by the PDP’s collation agent, Dino Melaye, that the INEC Chairman assigned scores to parties is false and irresponsible, according to the election umpire.

Rotimi stated that such comments have the potential to incite violence or disorder and are therefore inappropriate, emphasizing that such procedures do not involve a call for Mahmood to quit.

The Commission also stated that the preparations for the general election in 2023 are nearing completion, and that disgruntled parties could approach the court with proof to prosecute their case.

“There are procedures in place for aggrieved parties or candidates to follow when they are dissatisfied with the outcome of an election,” the statement says. Such procedures do not include requesting the resignation of the INEC Chairman or the cancellation of the poll.

“To be sure, dissatisfied parties are free to go to court and air their grievances while waiting for the matter to be settled. Making provocative remarks that could lead to violence or unrest is unacceptable.

“The general election proceedings for 2023 are nearing completion. It is only fair for disgruntled parties to allow the process to conclude before approaching the courts with evidence to continue their complaints.”
