The focus in the two Congo republics is expected to be on strengthening relations with France.

Mr. Macron’s journey to Africa occurred at a time when France, as a former colonial power, is under pressure in several African countries.

Anti-French sentiment is prevalent, for example, in Sahelian countries where France has troops stationed in the battle against terrorism.

Russia is also attempting to develop influence in the region through the Wagner mercenary group.
