President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has stated that the 2023 census will be conducted successfully utilizing digital tools.

Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed specifically stated that the 2023 population and housing census would use digital maps, questionnaires, and cloud computing. She stated this on Monday during a meeting of high-level partners in Abuja to solicit help for the conduct of the 2023 census.

Ms Ahmed added that the count method would ensure that the global climate change campaign’s target of lowering emissions by 30% unconditionally and an additional 15% conditionally by 2030 was met.

According to her, it has become vital and urgent for Nigeria to conduct another census over two decades after the last one, as explicitly stated in the National Development Plan 2021 to 2025.

“This month marks 17 years since the last national census was conducted in Nigeria in 2006. By the United Nations standard, PHC ought to be conducted every 10 years,” the regime’s finance minister said.

Ms Ahmed went on to say that there was a need to fix inconsistencies in the country’s census and statistics systems, which limited the effectiveness of development projects based on outdated data.

She emphasized that insufficient money to perform the census had been a key difficulty over the years.

“It is worthy to note that 60 per cent of the funding and other requirements for the 2006 census could not have been achieved without the invaluable support of the development partners, corporate bodies and other key stakeholders,” the minister noted.

Clem Agba, Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, said major activities in preparation for the census had been completed successfully, revealing that only Abadam LGA remains to be demarcated in the demarcation of 773 local government areas into enumeration areas for the census, and a hybrid enumeration strategy is being deployed for its demarcation.

According to Mr Agba, the Buhari administration established a census call center and situation room, performed a trial post-enumeration survey, and held a stakeholder conference at the national and state levels.
