The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to a Thursday court judgement ordering the commission to allow the use of Temporary Voter Cards.

Earlier this week, news outlets claimed that a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the electoral authority to authorize the use of TVC in the March 18 gubernatorial election.

The order was issued by the presiding judge, Judge Obiora Egwuatu, while delivering judgment in a suit filed by two Nigerians seeking to utilize TVCs in general elections when Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are not available.

Court Instructs INEC To Allow Use Of Temporary Voter Cards In Upcoming Elections

According to the judge, the order was issued on the assumption that the plaintiffs were properly registered and recorded in INEC’s database prior to the start of the general election.

INEC responded to the court judgement by stating that it had not received the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the order of a federal high court ordering it to allow registered voters with TVCS to participate in the upcoming elections.

The commission further stated that the ruling violated the terms of the Electoral Act 2033 (as amended), which states that only voters possessing Permanent Voter Cards PVCs shall be permitted to vote in elections.
