Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Election Commission, INEC, has stated that the allegation that he rigged the presidential election may result in a lawsuit.
The electoral chief responded to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, after the party’s leadership urged him to resign on Friday.
The opposition has requested that the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) investigate the chairman for alleged election results manipulation.
INEC Speaks On Purported Rigging For APC, Resignation Calls Against Yakubu
According to Rotimi Oyekanmi, Yakubu’s Press Secretary, the call was misplaced and challenged the PDP to prove its accusations in court.
The spokeswoman queried why the party did not present evidence to back up “the bogus charges”.
According to Oyekanmi, the PDP also failed to provide evidence of how Yakubu hampered the uploading and transmission of polling unit results.
The aide claimed that the INEC “does not rig elections”, noting that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, “has protected the integrity of the electoral process”.
Oyekanmi reminded the PDP that it had rejected the results of the February 25 election and should follow the route of honor by pursuing its appeal until a decision was reached.
Four Main Parties Rigged Presidential Poll – ADC Candidate
“Canvassing the same issues the party intends to plead in court on the pages of newspapers and calling for the resignation of the INEC Chairman is like putting the cart before the horse.
“The PDP is hereby reminded that making libelous allegations against the person of the INEC Chairman is actionable,” he added.
