Obaseki Pays Tribute To Afegbua, Nigeria’s First Female Senator

Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State, has expressed his condolences on the death of Franca Afegbua, the former Senator who represented the Bendel North Senatorial District in Old Bendel State.

Afegbua, Nigeria’s first democratically elected female senator, died at the age of 79.
The governor lauded Afegbua as a “pacesetter, trailblazer, and visionary” who continues to inspire women in Nigeria and throughout Africa in a statement issued on Monday.
“I am grieved by the news of Nigeria’s first democratically elected female senator, who represented Bendel North Senatorial District in Old Bendel State,” he stated.

“She was an entrepreneur who championed the cause of female representation in government and gender mainstreaming at a time when it was a herculean task. She was a trailblazer who deserves to be celebrated for her bravery and exemplary exploits.”

The governor said the death of Afegbua was a huge loss because she was an inspiration to young girls, who are in need of mentors.
