Guber Elections: Thugs Hijack, Burn Election Materials in Bayelsa

Several alleged thugs have kidnapped electoral materials and destroyed them in Bayelsa State, in southern Nigeria.

Nigerians will go to the polls today to elect governors in 28 of the country’s 36 states, as well as 993 members to represent constituencies in state houses of assembly.

Because of litigation and judicial decisions, governorship elections in eight states, including Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo, are held during the off-season.

On Saturday, Newsmen learned that some furious youths had kidnapped voting materials in Otuokpoti Ward II of Bayelsa State’s Ogbia Local Government Area.

The materials were later discovered to have been burned by the youths.

Due to the threats, officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission were obliged to flee to the region due to the threats of violence.
