Members of the Free Nigeria Group, a civil society organization, stormed the National Assembly to protest the conclusion of the February 25 presidential election.

Protesters held placards with messages such as “Save our Democracy,” “Politicians are Killing our Democracy,” and “INEC is Killing Nigerian Democracy.”

According to news accounts, the demonstration, which began at the Unity Fountain in Maitama, stopped vehicular movement in the nation’s capital for many hours.

The marchers, on the other hand, encountered heavy opposition when they were denied access into the National Assembly premises by security personnel commanded by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the parliament.

The DPO, who arrived to address the demonstrators, stated that they would not be permitted into the National Assembly premises since there was no written permission from the group or the relevant authorities.

Dr. Moses Ogidi Paul, the group’s leader and co-convener, condemned INEC as a dysfunctional institution and demanded that the 2023 presidential election be canceled.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Head of the Independent National Election Commission (INEC), has been arrested and charged with managing the “fraudulent presidential election,” according to Paul.

The development came less than 24 hours after the group conducted a similar protest at INEC headquarters, demanding Yakubu’s immediate departure.
