Labor Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized the unsettling attacks on voters during Saturday’s governorship election.

Obi, who published some graphic photographs of the attack on his Twitter page on Thursday, said it is distressing that citizens who simply went out to fulfill their civic duties and vote for their preferred candidates were brutalized and attacked in such a heinous and wicked manner.

He questioned security agencies for failing to protect citizens during the election while arresting citizens for exercising their right to free expression on social media.

“It is equally disheartening that the security agencies with the constitutional duty of preventing and detecting crime have not made the arrest of the criminals who perpetrated these brutal acts a primary focus but were instead quick to detect and arrest citizens who are using their right to free speech and social media to condemn the wrongdoings of our supposed leaders.

“Protection of lives and properties is the primary responsibility of government and this responsibility must be sacrosanct including in our dear country,” he said.
