The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has chastised the Federal Government for charging Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the last election, of treason.

According to media reports, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has warned the LP presidential candidate against encouraging Nigerians to riot over the outcome of the presidential election.

On Tuesday, in an interview with several foreign media organizations in Washington, D.C., Mohammed said it is improper for Obi to seek redress in court over the outcome of the presidential election while also inciting people to violence.

According to the minister, Obi’s running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, stated that President-elect Bola Tinubu should not be sworn in as president amounted to treason.

He had said: “Obi and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, cannot be threatening Nigerians that if the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, of the All Progressives Congress is sworn-in on May 29, it will be the end of democracy in Nigeria.

“This is treason. You cannot be inviting insurrection, and this is what they are doing. Obi’s statement is that of a desperate person, he is not the Democrat that he claimed to be. A democrat should not believe in democracy only when he wins the election.”

In an interview with Newsmen on Tuesday night, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi claimed the treason charge against Obi was false and unfounded.

Abdullahi has advised the federal government against arresting the former Anambra State Governor or his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed.

The PDP stalwart argued that arresting Obi “would be damaging to national peace and prosperity,” adding that the prospect of an arrest is absurd and unwise.
