Chijioke Edoga of the Labour Party, LP, has finally filed his plea with the Enugu State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal to challenge Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the victor of the March 18 governorship election in the state.

Remember that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, pronounced Mbah the victor of the election, claiming he received 160, 895 votes to Edoga’s 157, 552 votes.

The announcement occurred 48 hours after the election, following an INEC review of the contentious results from the State’s Nkanu East Local Government Area.

Edoga claimed that the outcome was tainted and did not reflect the aspirations of voters in the state.

Meanwhile, Edoga based his appeal to the tribunal, which designated him and the Labour Party as plaintiffs and the INEC, Mbah, and the PDP as defendants, on the fact that Mbah was not qualified to contest the election at the time of the poll, among other things.

The petition contends that Mbah “having presented a forged National Youth Service Corps Certificate with Certificate Number A808297 was not qualified to contest the disputed election to the office of Governor of Enugu State”.

Edoga also based his petition on grounds that the “declaration of Mbah as the winner was invalid by reason of Non- Compliance with the Electoral Act, 2022, and that he was not duly elected by a majority of lawful votes cast at the election.”
