Reading some of the tributes and comments written in memory of late Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, former Governor of Anambra State, some positive and several negative, one begins to appreciate the deep wisdom in the concept of ‘Ụkụtazụ’ in Igbo cosmology.

Ụkụtazụ propagates legacy, positive one, after a person has transited. It is possible to achieve self – immortalisation through good deeds when the person is still living.

Ndigbo also propagate Ụkụtazụ concept through names such as ‘Afamefula’, and traditional titles such as ‘Eziafakaego’. Parents while chastising their children use expressions such as ‘Remember the son or the daughter of who you are’. These are all reminders for one to live a good life.

BREAKING: Former Anambra State Governor, Chimaroke Mbadinuju Is Dead

Opinions vary on the stewardship of late Dr Mbadinuju in Anambra state but after reading this excerpt from the tribute in his honour, written by Chief Willie Obiano, former Governor of Anambra State, one is tempted to conclude that, perhaps, we all may have been unfair to Odera, the title that late Dr Mbadinuju was popularly known by.

“Mbadinuju’s reign as Anambra governor from 1999 to 2003 was a challenging period. He did his best to grapple with insecurity, perpetrated mostly by ruthless, unconscionable robbers, who were armed to the teeth. He curbed the menace, though his methods were unorthodox”.

“Mbadinuju will be remembered for the determination to succeed despite all odds and the love of education, which saw him establish the state university, now known as Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, with campuses in Uli, Ihiala Local Government Area, and Igbariam in Anambra East local government area”.

“Anambra people acknowledge Mbadinuju as the governor that ended, within a couple of months in office, the almost intractable Aguleri-Umuleri boundary dispute, which cost many lives, houses and other huge assets for years”.

Odera did his bit while on earth. May the living do theirs, and may his soul rest in peace, Amen.
