Abia Senatorial Election: I Benefited From BVAS, Naira Scarcity – Abaribe

On Monday, Abia senator Enyinnaya Abaribe praised the implementation of the BVAS, or Bimodal Voter Accreditation System.

The former Senate Minority Leader also claimed that massive vote-buying was stopped by the cash shortage brought on by the cashless legislation.

Abaribe delivered a presentation in Abuja at a seminar with the Media Educational Development Initiative for Africa, which had as its theme “Peace Journalism and Consolidation of Democracy in Nigeria.”

The former deputy governor thanked God for allowing him to survive the Southeast tsunami known as the Peter Obi that forced other politicians into retirement.

“I benefited from BVAS. The technology was right, the only issue is that we have to eliminate human interference,” the lawmaker said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, continues to get flak for certain polling places’ defective voting devices.

Abaribe won the February 25 Abia South senatorial election by defeating Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

He received 49,693 votes, defeating Labour Party, LP candidate Chinedu Onyeizu, who received 43,903 votes. Ikpeazu received 28,422 votes but disapproved with the outcome.
