On Tuesday, the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited NNPCL’s non-Executive Chairman, Senator Ifeanyi Godwin Ararume, was reinstated by an Abuja Federal High Court.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s dismissal of the businessman and departure from office on January 17, 2023 were both overturned by the court on the grounds that they were both arbitrary, illegitimate, and unlawful.

In a ruling on a lawsuit brought by Ararume, Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo ruled N5 billion against Buhari and the NNPCL to be paid to Ararume as compensation for the illegal termination of his employment and disruption of his appointment.

Ararume Sues Buhari For ‘Illegal Removal’ As NNPC Chairperson

Justice Ekwo ruled that Ararume should be reinstated right away in his position as the NNPCL’s non-executive chairman.

All decisions made by the NNPCL Board of Directors when Ararume was not present were likewise ruled by the judge to be invalid.

According to Justice Ekwo, Buhari violated the law when he fired Ararume for using his name to register NNPCL, and such a blatant act cannot be allowed to stand in the face of the law.

Ararume had brought Buhari before the court, asking it to declare his dismissal as the head of the NNPC illegal, unlawful, and unconstitutional as well as a complete violation of the CAMA statute, which NNPCL was formed under.

Along with requesting the court to issue an order restoring him to his position, Ararume also sought N100 billion in damages from President Buhari for the illegal manner in which he removed him from office, which caused him harm both domestically and abroad.
