Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) nominee, claimed that the country’s divisions were exacerbated by the results of the 2023 presidential election.
On Thursday night, Atiku issued a lengthy speech via his Twitter account in which he emphasized that Nigerians should not pretend that everything is fine in their country and emphasized how profoundly divided it is along ethnic and religious lines.
He added that Nigerians must make justice and fairness the nation’s defining characteristics. The former vice president expressed his serious concern over the shocking reality of ethnic and religious division in the nation.
Atiku added that Nigeria needs harmony and peace, and that people should live their life in a way that pleases God. He continued by saying that because Nigeria is so crucial, it shouldn’t entrust its future to polarizing and demagogic leaders.
He wrote: “Nigeria needs peace and harmony, and we as citizens must ensure that we live our lives according to the pleasings of God. We must make justice and fairness the hallmark of our nation.
“Let’s not pretend that all is well. Our country is deeply divided. The outcome of the 2023 presidential election has made this division worse. I’m sincerely worried about this appalling reality.
“Nigeria is so important to us that we shouldn’t abandon its fate to divisive and demagogic politicians. We are all stakeholders in a united Nigeria. We must be part of the efforts to achieve interfaith dialogue to achieve peaceful coexistence and a clime of love and religious tolerance.”
