General Yakubu Gowon, a former military head of state, has yielded to criticism and canceled the prayer rally planned to inaugurate Alex Otti as governor-elect of Abia State.

Gowon, the founder of Nigeria Prays, had faced criticism for his decision to travel to Abia state in support of a prayer rally that is slated to take place on Sunday, April 23, 2023.

Apostle Chuks Alozie, who throughout the weekend served as the Prayer Rally’s coordinator, claimed that Gowon had suspended the program as a result of criticisms.

According to Alozie, Gowon asserted that he would not allow a sincere call for prayer to draw him into the tumultuous world of politics.

“We will continue to pray and strive for the peace and unity of Nigeria, especially Abia State,” Apostle Alozie quoted the General to have said.

In Abia’s March 18 governorship election, Labour Party candidate Otti defeated PDP candidate Okey Ahiwe, who was his main rival.
