Presidency Lists Nigerians Who Enjoyed Buhari’s Support In Their Appointments Abroad

On Sunday, the Presidency claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari had a significant role in the selection of several Nigerians to lead important international organizations.

According to Newsmen, the presidency made this claim in a fact sheet outlining the accomplishments of Buhari’s administration in several areas between 2015 and 2023, which was signed by Femi Adesina, the president’s special adviser on media and publicity.

Nigerians who rose to leadership positions in a number of international organizations with President Buhari’s assistance and backing were named by the administration in the fact sheet.

The presidency claims that President Buhari had a key role in Amina Mohammed’s appointment as the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) in 2017 and in his selection as the African Union Anti-Corruption Champion in 2018.

According to the report, President also backed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a former minister of finance, in her bid to lead the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2021. Okonjo-Iweala, according to the presidency, was the first woman and African to hold the role.

Other Nigerians who benefited from the President’s assistance included Akinwumi Adesina, the President of the African Development Bank, who was elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2020, and Benedict Oramah, the President of the African Export-Import Bank, who was elected to a second term in 2020.

Chile Eboe-Osuji, President of the International Criminal Court, who was elected in 2018, and the late Mohammad Barkindo, Secretary-General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, who was elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2019,

Others include Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, President of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, 2019–2020; Bankole Adeoye, Commissioner, African Union Commission’s Department for Political Affairs & Peace and Security, elected 2021; Funke Adeyemi, elected Secretary-General of the African Civil Aviation Commission in 2022; Mustafa Shehu elected President of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations in 2022, Osahon Enabulele elected President of the World Medical Association, in 2022, among others.
