The upper legislative house has decided to look into the causes of the Nigeria Immigration Service’s (NIS) delays in issuing and renewing passports.

This comes as the Senate on Tuesday instructed its Interior Committee to look into the delay in passport issue and renewal.

Additionally, it requested that the committee look into the NIS’s contract for the printing of passports, according to report.

The order, which was given on Tuesday at the start of plenary, came in response to a motion made by Senator Uche Ekwunife, who claimed that Nigerians are having difficulty and stress in obtaining passports.

Despite the six-week deadline, the lawmaker claims that Nigerians now wait three to six months to receive their passports from the NIS.

She acknowledged that the processing of passports in Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Abuja had become incredibly challenging.

She claims that the change is forcing Nigerians who live in certain states to travel to other states outside of their own to get their passports processed.

Isah Idris Jere, the acting comptroller general of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has had his term extended by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Akuneme said that the information was contained in a letter of extension from Buhari that was signed by Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, the President’s Chief of Staff.

Concerning Jere’s retirement, there has been ambiguity and disagreement. The most recent development would provide the Service some relief.

Recall that Isah Jere was instructed to continue working after retiring by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) board.
