UPDATE: Abia Assembly Suspends Deputy Speaker, Eight Others

Chief Ifeanyi Uchendu, the deputy speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, and eight other members have been expelled.

Tuesday’s session, presided over by the controversial Speaker Chinedum Orji, saw the suspension of the members.

According to news reports, Orji was impeached on Tuesday by 18 of the House’s 24 members.

The Assembly’s grounds were taken over by the police before the Orji’s purported impeachment. The Speaker was declared to have been impeached shortly after.

But a few hours later, Orji made his appearance and led the House’s plenary.

Nine members were present for the sitting, according to the newsmen.

A source close to the Speaker told DAILY POST that, “Orji remains the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly. Eleven members are with him. As you can see, nine of them attended the sitting, while two, who are currently out of the country, took permission.”

Along with Rt. Hon. Chikwendu Kalu, Hon. Chukwudi Apugo, Hon. Aaron Uzodike, Hon. Chukwu Chijioke, Hon. Thomas Nkoro, Hon. Mike Ukoha, Obinna Ichita, and Hon. Okey Igwe, Uchendu was suspended during the sitting.

The suspension would begin right away and be without pay, according to the House.
