Atiku, Tambuwal, Dogara Behind Betara’s Reps Speakership Bid

Atiku Abubakar, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and Yakubu Dogara, among other opposition heavyweights, are reportedly supporting Muktar Aliyu Betara, the chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, in the campaign for the leadership of the incoming 10th House of Representatives.

Candidates for the Speakership are currently aggressively influencing the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee (NWC), which will ultimately elect the Speaker.

Some of the aspirants contesting for the position of the 10th Speaker of the House of Representatives are, Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Idris Wase (APC, Plateau); Yusuf Adamu Gagdi (APC, Plateau); Muktar Aliyu Betara (APC, Borno); Princess Miriam Onuoha (APC, Imo); Abbas Ta­judeen (APC, Kaduna); Aminu Sani Jaji (APC, Zamfara), who was in the 8th House; Makki Yalleman (APC, Jigawa); Ra­heem Olawuyi (APC, Kwara); Sada Soli Jibiya (APC, Katsi­na); Alhassan Ado Doguwa (APC, Kano), and a few others.

Through proxies, candidates are reportedly contacting NWC members, and some with “deep pockets” have reportedly offered gifts and money.

According to a source who spoke with Daily Independent, a candidate from the Northeast who is against zoning for the Speaker position has sent $10,000 to each member of the APC NWC.

In order to improve his prospects of winning the seat, this candidate wants the party to zone the Speaker role to the entire North.

Other candidates have also asked APC NWC members for assistance, with those without “deep pockets” giving what they can.

Previous instances of this lobbying approach have sparked rebellion within the party and led to the election of candidates from different zones than those the party had wanted.
