Indomie Noodles: Expect Cancer Spread In Few Months – NICRAT Alerts Nigerians

Following the most recent finding on Indomie Noodles, the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) has warned Nigerians about the potential spread of cancer in the nation.

Earlier, there had been reports that ethylene oxide had been discovered in one of Nigerians’ favorite fast foods, Indomie Instant Noodles ‘Special Chicken Flavour’.

Following an investigation by the Malaysian and Taiwanese authorities, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) issued a warning.

NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye allayed concerns and stated that noodles made in Nigeria are safe for consumption in a statement released on Tuesday.

However, in a different statement on Wednesday, Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, the director general of NICRAT, expressed concern over the potential spread of cancer in the coming months, particularly to people who may have previously consumed the contaminated Indomie.

Aliyu praised NAFDAC for acting quickly and starting an investigation into the well-known fast food.

He said “Nigerians should expect an escalation of various forms of cancers in the months or years ahead. Depending on how long people have consumed the affected product.”

The NICRAT DG reported that 78,000 people died from complications associated to cancer in 2020 alone (34,200 men and 44,699 women).

Aliyu urged the populace to heed NAFDAC’s directives about the prohibition of imports of Indomie Instant Noodles with “Special Chicken Flavour” and their consumption.

“We will further collaborate with NAFDAC in ensuring the safety and protection of Nigerians from cancer-causing agents,” the statement added.

The highly reactive chemical ethylene oxide, which newsmen discovered, is used to create solvents, emulsifiers, detergents, glycol ethers, and polyglycol ethers.

The cancer-causing substance is also employed as a fumigant to disinfect kitchenware, spices, and medical supplies, especially those affected by heat sterilization.
