According to strong indications, Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, may have advanced in the race to lead the Senate of the 10th National Assembly after forming an alliance with Senator Barau Jibrin, who would have served as his deputy if Akpabio had won.

According to information obtained, more than 65 senators purportedly joined the Akpabio/Jibrin coalition and publicly expressed their support for them after ratifying their commitment.

ThisDay reports that Akpabio has started to use his connections and advantages as a former governor and senator to have an advantage over rivals.

Both new and veteran senators supported the coalition between Akpabio and Jibrin. They were thought to have lined up behind Akpabio in order to balance the north-south divide and the Muslim faith as Bola Tinubu, the incoming president, and Kashim Shettima, his running mate, are both Muslims.

It was believed that the tide may have started to turn in their favor with Jibrin, the senator representing Kano North, working along with Akpabio for the position of Deputy Senate President.

Even though he has been quiet and secretive about it, Adams Oshiomhole, a former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and first-time senator, has refused to give up on his ambition.

The former governor of Edo State apparently wishes that everything would quickly come to a head and that the current deck of cards will be reshuffled in his favor.

Former Labour leader Oshiomhole is reportedly relying on parts of the constitution that, despite of current restrictions, permit all senators to run as a consequence of their fundamental human rights.

Orji Uzor Kalu, the Chief Whip of the 9th Senate, believes he is capable of leading the Senate and that he is qualified to do so.

However, according to This Day, many of his party members and peers in the Red chambers believe he is suffering from a credibility crisis.

Former Abia State Governor Orji Kalu has said numerous times that allocating the seat to the South East would offer the Igbo a feeling of belonging since it would be perceived as an intentional effort to address the alleged ongoing marginalization of the Igbo in the country’s political system.
