Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president-elect, has started taking action to resolve the issue engulfing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over its zoning plan for the 10th National Assembly.

According to reports, Tinubu met with lawmakers-elect on the platforms of opposition political parties on Wednesday to quell growing opposition to the nomination of Tajudeen Abbas from Kaduna State (North West) as Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu from Abia State (South East) as Deputy Speaker, and Godswill Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta affairs, as president of the Senate, Senator Barau Jubrin from Kano North Senatorial District (North West)

Recall that those against the endorsement of Abbas include the Deputy Speaker of the House, Ahmed Idris Wase; chairman, committee on Appropriation, Mukhtar Aliyu Betara; chairman, committee on Navy, Yusuf Gagdi; House leader, Hassan Doguwa; chairman, committee on Water Resources, Sada Soli; former chairman, committee on Internal Security and Intelligence in the 8th Assembly, Aminu Sani Jaji, and Hon Mariam Onuoha.

According to reports, Abbas and the departing Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, invited the incoming legislators to Tinubu’s home in Lagos State.

The conference, which included no fewer than 30 members-elect, was reportedly held in part to gauge Abass’ degree of support across party lines and persuade Tinubu of the popularity of his selection.

The previous governor of Lagos State met with Mukhtar Betara, a speaker candidate who felt mistreated.

According to a source at the meeting, the proposal was intended to serve two reasons. He also said that Gbajabiamila organised the meeting to show and persuade Tinubu of the scope and force of mobilization by the team supporting Abbas.

The facts that led to the APC’s choice to zone the leadership of the House were described by Tinubu to the opposition MPs.
