According to the factional National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Basiru Lamidi Apapa, the party’s leadership issue was caused by Mr. Peter Obi’s disregard for the law when he ran for president in the party’s February election.

According to him, the leadership issue could have been avoided if Obi had refused to recognize Mr. Julius Abure, the party’s suspended national chairman, in accordance with the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory’s ruling.

However, Apapa requested that Obi enter the argument impartially in an effort to end the ongoing problem amicably.

At a press conference following his assault at the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja on Wednesday, Apapa urged that Obi be impartial in order to settle the contentious chairmanship dispute.

The Deputy National Chairman of the party in the North, Mike Ayuba Auta, the National Publicity Secretary, Olufemi Abayomi Arabambi, and one of the women leaders, Mrs. Rukayat Salihu Umar, all attended the media briefing. Apapa described the incident at the Presidential tribunal, where a brawl broke out in Peter Obi’s presence, as shameful and a test of Obi’s leadership abilities.

If Obi had complied with the Federal Capital Territory High Court’s ruling prohibiting Julius Abure and three other individuals from representing themselves as party national officers as a result of their forgery and perjury indictments, according to Apapa, the party’s leadership dilemma would have been resolved.

Tracing the origins of the problem in leadership, Apapa claimed that he was unanimously chosen to serve as the party’s acting national chairman immediately after the party received notice of the court’s ruling.

Despite the court’s decision and as a presidential contender seeking justice from the same court of law, Apapa said it was improper for Obi to show respect to Abure.

Apapa fiercely refuted charges that he received 500 million Naira from outside forces to undermine the party, claiming that neither he nor any other person or group had any control over him.

He added that Peter Obi should not have claimed not to know him, alleging they worked closely together and even took the same planes during Peter Obi’s presidential campaign.

He pleaded with Obi to diffuse the situation by being impartial, open-minded, and fair.

Speaking during the briefing, Mike Ayuba Auta, the Deputy National Chairman of the Party in the North, refuted claims that the All Progressive Congress (APC) was responsible for the crisis and said the claims were unfounded.
