The Lagos Command of the Nigerian Police Force claimed on Tuesday that a member of its staff who had been struck over the weekend by well-known Afrobeats musician Seun Kuti had fallen unconscious after completing a report on the event.

The late iconic musician’s son, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, reportedly made headlines over the weekend after a video of him punching a police officer appeared online, according to newsmen.

Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), immediately issued a warrant for his arrest.

Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act is violated by his offense. In order to wait for legal counsel from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, the police prosecutor, S. A. Adebese, asked the court to remand the defendant for 21 days.

According to Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress, who is running for president in 2023, the police force’s prosecutors are requesting an ex parte order to imprison Seun Kuti for 21 days in order to get his “statement.”

He also claimed on Tuesday via his Twitter page that the prosecutor had indicated the officer involved in the confrontation is currently in a “coma” after he had left Seun’s house and finished writing his report.

“There is institutional and historical grudge to be settled with the Kutis. They are not seeking justice just want to exact revenge,” Sowore claimed.

According to Newsmen, Kuti’s attorney appealed with the court not to remand his client earlier and claimed he was not aware of the remand motion.

The Yaba Magistrates Court judge, however, decided to remand the Afrobeat singer for 48 hours at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti Lagos, after hearing from all parties during the court session today.
