The Labour Party (LP) has labeled the phone call between Bola Tinubu, the president-elect of Nigeria, and Anthony Blinken, the secretary of state of the United States, as concerning.

Remember that Bliken called Tinubu on Tuesday, 24 hours after declaring that certain people who harmed the democratic process during the 2023 elections would face visa restrictions.

The U.S. senior official informed Tinubu that the Joe Biden administration is committed to fostering closer ties with Nigeria, according to a statement issued by the U.S. Department of State Spokesperson, Matthew Miller.

According to the US Secretary, the alliance between the US and Nigeria is based on common interests and solid inter-ethnic ties, and Tinubu’s administration should work to further enhance such ties.

Yunusa Tanko, the chief spokesperson for the LP Presidential Campaign Council, expressed disappointment that Blinken would be discussing bilateral relations with Tinubu in an interview with The Punch on Wednesday.

However, Tanko emphasized that the outcome of the presidential election is being contested in court and that their conversation should not be interpreted as an endorsement.

He said, “It is worrisome at this point to hear them discuss bilateral discussion at the point in which the issue of election is being challenged in the court of law.

UPDATE: Atiku Blasts US Secretary Of State For Calling Tinubu

“As we are concerned, we are aware that a statement was issued by those who have been part of the rigging machine in Nigeria’s electoral system. We don’t want to take issue with regard to any call being made to a government that is already seen to be illegal.

“We cannot gratify such statement as a kind of endorsement. We will rather call it a caution to see whether the judiciary will make do with what is already on their desk.”
