On Wednesday, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) urged all Muslims running for the Senate presidency to withdraw in favor of a Southern Nigerian Christian candidate.

In a statement, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, Executive Director of MURIC, said that as a significant participant in Nigerian politics, they had closely followed the controversy that greeted the Muslim-Muslim ticket and how it led to Nigeria electing a Muslim president and vice president.

He added, “In view of this outcome and considering the multi-religious character of our dear country, Nigeria, it is our considered opinion that the post of senate president should go to a Southern Christian.”

He asserts that Nigeria needs both Muslim and Christian cooperation and that only such cooperation can lead to peace and progress in the nation.

Despite being the majority in the nation, he believed that Muslims should not hold all of the top positions. He emphasized that Muslims should be willing to share power with their Christian neighbors.
