The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recently gave a senior officer of the Nigerian Army more than one-fourth of a billion naira.
DAILY POST obtained a copy of the two-page letter addressed to an Army official as well as a snapshot of the N270,000,000 credit alert that was included as proof.
A memo dated April 14, 2023 was sent to the Commandant of the Army War College (WU Bassey Barracks) in Asokoro, Abuja by Colonel MS (surname and service number concealed).
He remembered getting the document on April 3 and it was titled “Request For Investigation Into The Payment Of Large Sum of Money Into My Salary Account.”
N270,000,000 was transferred through the CBN Alert System (reference number withheld) and credited to the Colonel’s bank account.
The officer claimed that the alarming incidence of fraud committed in several governmental entities led him to decide to alert his superiors.
“Sir, to the best of my knowledge, my emolument is by no way close to the amount paid, and I am not entitled to such payment from the CBN.
“Additionally, going by the current trend of financial fraud and sharp practices by various institutions, this raises alarm and concern for me,” he wrote.

In order to formally reverse the payment to the Federal Government coffers, the Colonel urged the Commandant to determine the reason for the payment.
It’s too soon to guess, but a thorough investigation should provide light on the circumstances surrounding the CBN’s mistaken transfer of such a sizable sum to a personal account.
Under the condition of anonymity, a War College officer informed Daily Post on Friday that the Army school had received the appeal.
The serviceman complimented the Colonel for showing patriotism and promoting the armed forces, saying that the Commandant had already taken action.
“I can confirm that the Commandant is working on the matter; he has informed higher authorities for further action”, he disclosed.
