Idowu Owohunwa, the commissioner of police for Lagos State, denounced on Thursday the overzealous use of force by police officers enforcing the prohibition on the use of commercial motorbikes in several areas of the state.

When Owohunwa went to see a biker who had been abused by police in a recent viral video, he made his position known.
The rider was brutally attacked by three officers as seen in the video, leaving him with a head injury.

The victim’s bike was taken away by one of the policeman, while the other two departed in a tricycle.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a series of tweets via his Twitter handle, @BenHundeyin, Owohunwa condemned the policemen’s actions and told the public that disciplinary action had already been taken against the men.

Hundeyin wrote, “CP Idowu Owohunwa today (Thursday) visited the young man involved in this incident and members/leadership of Hausa community in Abattoir Market, Agege.
“The CP, who condemned the excessive use of force by the policemen in enforcing the existing ban on the use of motorcycles in certain parts of Lagos State, has assured members of the public that the disciplinary measures already initiated against the men would be brought to a logical conclusion and the outcome made public.

“The Command will continue to ensure that the rule of law is upheld, while not relenting in enforcing the laws of the land.”

Meanwhile, the state police command said it had arrested a 20-year-old boy, Benjamin Iggba, for allegedly stealing a cable that belonged to the state electricity board.

Hundeyin said the suspect was nabbed by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad for possessing a 20-metre-long cable.

While noting that the suspect was already facing prosecution, the Commander RRS, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, was quoted as saying his men had intensified efforts to arrest the three other suspects who absconded.

The police said additional items found on the suspect include two diggers; one shovel and armoured cables.
