Peter Obi wasn’t legitimate enough, in the opinion of Bashir Ahmad, the special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on digital communications, to have emerged as the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.

He charged Obi with defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party, where he later became a contender for president.

However, Ahmad said that by the time Obi joined the Labour Party, the tide had already turned against him, and under normal conditions, he should not have become the party’s front-runner for president.

“Frankly, even Peter Obi, according to our amended Electoral Act, wasn’t legitimate enough to become the presidential candidate of the Labour Party. When he ran away from PDP and joined Labour Party the time was not favored him to do so. But to them, everything is run by emotion,” Ahmad wrote on Twitter on Friday.

His statement comes at a time when all other Labour Party (LP) candidates in Abia and Kano states, as well as the newly elected governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, had their candidacies declared illegal by the Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice M N Yunusa.

According to Newsmen, Otti, the LP’s nominee for governor of Abia State, won the March 2023 election.

The court found that the selection process for these candidates did not follow the guidelines outlined in the 2022 electoral legislation.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Labour Party were both defendants in the lawsuit No. FHC/KN/CS/107/2023 filed by Mr. Ibrahim Haruna Ibrahim. The court determined that the Labour Party failed to provide INEC with its membership register at least 30 days before their primaries invalidated the selection process.
