The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, has filed a complaint against Bello Matawalle, the governor of Zamfara State, for claiming that Abdulrasheed Bawa, the commission’s chairman, sought a bribe of $2,000,000 from him.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, the governor who is being investigated for alleged corruption argued that the head of the anti-graft agency could not be trusted.

The governor claimed that the reason he was being looked at was because he declined to “offer the EFCC chairperson the money he requested from him.”

Wilson Uwujaren, a spokesman for the EFCC, refuted the governor’s accusations by asserting that Matawalle cannot be taken seriously because he has no proof against Bawa.

The statement reads, “Matawalle’s recourse to mudslinging is symptomatic of a drowning man clutching at straws.

“But despite the irritation of his phantom claims, the Commission will not be drawn into a mud fight with a suspect under its investigation for corruption and unconscionable pillage of the resources of his state.

“If Matawalle will be taken seriously, he should go beyond sabre-rattling by spilling the beans by providing concrete evidence as proof of his allegations”.
