On Monday, President Muhammadu Buhari voiced his belief that Bola Tinubu, who will be sworn in as Nigeria’s next leader on May 29, 2023, would continue to uphold his legacy.

At the Presidential Fleet Review, 2023, held yesterday at the Naval Dockyard Limited in Victoria Island, Lagos, where he remembered some of the accomplishments and contributions made by his government to the force, Buhari made this statement.

The departing Nigerian president expressed his satisfaction with the military’s increased combat readiness. Buhari brags that Tinubu will continue to give the Nigerian Navy the essential support it needs to continue on the upward trajectory it has experienced under his leadership.

“My best wishes to our Navy for protecting our maritime domain and the economic prosperity of Nigeria. I wish you all fair winds as I leave office on May 29. ONWARD TOGETHER, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The President cited the purchase of 20 capital ships for the Navy, which included offshore patrol vessels, landing ship transports, hydrographic survey vessels, seaward defense boats, helicopters, as well as more than 300 inshore patrol vessels and assault craft, as part of the administration’s efforts to recapitalize the Navy Fleet over the previous seven years. The President expressed hope that under Tinubu’s leadership, the Navy would continue to acquire new assets, expand shipbuilding for export, and improve ship repair and maintenance.

NN410, an Italian-made modern helicopter, and NNS KADA, a landing ship transport built in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, were among the major additions to the Navy’s fleet that President Buhari unveiled at the fleet review, according to Naija News.

He expressed gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for the kind contribution of NNS IBENO and emphasized the significance of reciprocal military cooperation with allies, which had inspired the Nigerian Navy’s efforts to develop local ships.

According to him, the Nigerian Navy’s efforts to build indigenous ships in accordance with the country’s objective to develop local content had been successful.

“Our naval engineers were wholly responsible for building three seaward defence boats, namely NNS ANDONI, NNS KARADUWA and NNS OJI. In December 2021, I performed a keel laying foundation for the construction of 2 Seaward Defence Boats, which will be ready by 2024.

“At this rate, I have no doubt that our Navy will soon commence construction of larger ships for itself and other navies in the region and beyond.

“This achievement is a great pride to Nigeria and an impressive contribution to national development,’’ the President said.
