Chief Ambrose Albert Owuru, a former presidential candidate, was fined N40 million by the Court of Appeal in Abuja on Thursday for filing a bogus lawsuit to prevent the inauguration of President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu on May 29.

The Attorney General of the Federation, Independent National Electoral Commission, Tinubu, and President Muhammadu Buhari, whom the politician named as the first through fourth defendants in the case, all received fine orders from the appellate court requiring them to each receive N10 million in damages.

By filing a frivolous, vexatious, and irritable lawsuit to irritate the respondents, Owuru engaged in a severe misuse of the judicial system, according to Justice Jamil Tukur, who read the lead judgment of the three-person panel of the court.

The Owuru grievances against the 2019 presidential election were deemed unusual and uncalled for by the Court of Appeal because they had already been taken all the way to the Supreme Court and were dismissed for lack of merit.

According to Justice Tukur, Owuru’s attempt to revive a case that had been dead at the Supreme Court since 2019 was done so in order to put lower courts in conflict with the high court’s authority.
