Igbos have being urged to reduce the enormous sums they spend on funeral rites and instead direct some of those expenditures into community development and empowerment of the living.

Prof. Samuel Ngozi Agu of Abia State University, Uturu, offered the counsel while presenting the 67th inaugural lecture of the school in the university’s auditorium.

He bemoaned the vast sums of money that many families were forking over to carry out the funeral arrangements for their loved ones, even with some of the grieving occasionally borrowing money to stage talk of the town burial.

Agu, who urged reconsideration of the “Second Burial” concept, claimed that it was to blame for increased budgets for funeral expenses in Igbo communities.

The initial lecturer recommended abandoning harmful cultural customs and predicted that if his suggestions were followed, future growth would be more rapid.

“Resources spent in organizing such burials could be better invested in youth empowerment or any other form of community development,” Agu said.

He urged for an end to “glutinous” burial events and proposed modest spending on funeral rites.

The opening lecturer took advantage of the opportunity to demand that the Abia State government form a commission for truth, reconciliation, restoration, and enlightenment.
