The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has rejected a measure to establish the National Council of Christian Education, claiming that it violates sections 10 and 42(3) of the Nigerian Constitution.

Instead of promoting a bill that violates Nigeria’s secular character, the bishops tasked the Christian Association of Nigeria, which originally pushed for the bill in the National Assembly, to promote legislation that decisively addresses unprovoked attacks on Christians in the North, among other things.

In a statement issued by its President, Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, and Secretary, Bishop Donatus Ogu, the CBCN opposed the law.

According to the statement, the law was intended to, among other things, certify Christian religion education instructors at the elementary and secondary levels, approve the content of all Christian Religion Education in all schools, and accredit programs of Christian theology institutions.

The bill, the Catholic bishops lamented, made no exception for seminaries and other religious institutes owned by various Christian denominations throughout the federation, claiming that it violated their rights to provide instruction and formation in accordance with their respective doctrines, citing Section 42 (3) of the 1999 Constitution.
