In a fresh development in the Labour Party (LP) leadership crisis, the party’s factional National Chairman, Alhaji Lamidi Apapa, has petitioned a Federal High Court in Abuja to force the Inspector-General of Police to remove the suspended National Chairman, Julius Abure, from the party’s national secretariat.

Apapa and his co-plaintiffs, which include Acting National Secretary Alhaji Lawal Saleh and National Youth Leader Comrade Anslem Eragbe, have filed a suit seeking a permanent injunction to prevent Abure and three other suspended national officers from continuing to claim they are the party’s national chairman and officers.

The plaintiffs further request that the court annul all activities made by the defendants since they were restrained by the FCT High Court and then suspended by the Labour Party’s National Executive Council (NEC) on May 3, 2023.

The lawsuit further requests that the defendants account for all money or monies received on behalf of the party and repay such funds.

The plaintiffs referred to Abure and the other co-defendants, who were suspended from their jobs, as “illegal occupants” of the party’s national office in Abuja in their court filing.

They referred to the Labour Party’s constitution, claiming that the NEC had the right to sanction party members and national officers for misbehavior.

They said that because Abure had been suspended by the NEC, he could no longer present himself as the party’s national chairman.

When the case was brought in court, Anderson Asamota, the plaintiffs’ lawyer, declared that all defendants had been correctly served.

However, one of the defendants’ attorneys contended that not all of the defendants had received the court papers.

As a result, the judge adjourned the case until November 28 and directed that the summons and hearing notices be given on all essential parties.
