As electrical workers joined the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in its warning strike over the impact of the elimination of the petrol subsidy on Nigerians, a nationwide blackout is expected.

As a result of the federal government’s failure to carry out some of the agreements made at prior meetings and continue negotiations, the NLC today began a two-day statewide strike.

However, electricity distribution businesses revealed on Tuesday that their employees had joined the strike in support of the NLC.

The business claimed that the disruption was brought on by the labour union’s implementation of its two-day warning strike, and it recommended clients to take the appropriate safety measures to manage the power loss.

The statement reads: “We apologise for any inconvenience you may be experiencing as a result of this, as we continue our engagement with key stakeholders towards minimising the impact of the strike on our customers.

“Kindly unplug sensitive electronic devices and appliances from power sources pending the restoration of power.”

The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC) claimed that due to the strike, it has shut down its feeders.

The firm claimed in a statement released by its spokesman, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, that the warning strike is to blame for the outages in KEDC’s franchise.

The statement reads: “We regret to announce that the outage being experienced currently in our franchise states is due to the warning strike embarked upon by the Nigerian Labour Congress and its affiliate unions.

“The action has necessitated the shutting down of all 33KV feeders by the striking workers.

“We hope the impasse between the federal government and the NLC shall be resolved soonest so that power supply can be restored. We regret all inconvenience.”
