On today’s opening of the 34.85km Oyo-Iseyin road in Oyo State, a video of the former president Olusegun Obasanjo ordering Oyo monarchs to stand has leaked on social media.

At the launching of internal roads in Iseyin, Obasanjo, who was welcomed by Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, made forceful motions and motioned for the traditional leaders to stand.

Although he said there should be the utmost respect for the traditional institution, he said that respect should also be shown to a sitting governor or president who is superior to the traditional leaders.

He added exhorted leaders to adopt a democratic system that fosters prosperity as opposed to one that causes pain for the populace.

He stated, “We must discard a form of democracy that perpetuates poverty, insecurity, and unemployment, and instead prioritize the people’s enjoyment of the dividends of democracy.”

According to the ex-president, democracy is nothing without work.

“Democracy that nurtures poverty is abortion. Democracy that nurtures unemployment is a failure,” he added.
