The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reported that a significant number of passport booklets, totaling 112,351, remain uncollected by applicants as of October 5, 2023. This disclosure was made during a press conference held at the NIS headquarters in Abuja.
Acting Comptroller General (CG) of the NIS, Adepoju Carol Wura-Ola, announced that the service had successfully cleared a backlog of 204,332 passport applications, meeting a two-week deadline set by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. However, while progress has been made, there is still a substantial number of uncollected passport booklets.
Wura-Ola urged applicants who have submitted their passport applications to come forward and collect their documents without any additional charges. The NIS is eager to ensure that applicants receive their passports promptly.
In her address, the Acting CG emphasized that the NIS, in collaboration with its partners, has upgraded its facilities to meet the increasing demand for passports among Nigerians. Additionally, the service is actively working towards automating the passport application process, which is expected to enhance efficiency and streamline the application and collection procedures.
