The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria has intercepted various drug smuggling attempts, uncovering illicit substances destined for international destinations.

On October 15, the NDLEA’s Directorate of Operations and General Investigations, working closely with courier companies, made a significant breakthrough. They intercepted 1kg of methamphetamine concealed within containers of body cream, set to be shipped to New Zealand. In another consignment, 2.5kg of cocaine and phenacetin were found hidden within the walls of a carton, with Saudi Arabia as its intended destination.

In a subsequent operation on October 18, the NDLEA seized an additional 112 grams of Dimethyl Sulfone and 583 grams of cocaine and phenacetin. The Dimethyl Sulfone was concealed within the hollow of a motor driving shaft, headed for New Zealand. The cocaine and phenacetin were ingeniously packed into a bottle of body cream intended for Saudi Arabia.

The NDLEA’s vigilance and diligence didn’t stop there. On October 16, at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc’s imports shed at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, a consignment of ten cartons containing 500,000 pills of tramadol 225mg, branded as tapentadol, was seized. This cargo, shipped from India through Qatar Airways, was purported to be in transit to Monrovia, Liberia. However, a successful partnership and intelligence-sharing mechanism between the NDLEA and their Liberian counterparts revealed the true nature of the shipment.

The fight against drug trafficking extends beyond Nigeria’s borders. In another instance, a passenger attempting to board a Qatar Airways flight to Muscat, Oman, was apprehended. This individual had concealed 11.100kgs of skunk and 600 grams of tramadol within foodstuffs. Thanks to the vigilance and dedication of NDLEA officers, the smuggling attempt was thwarted, and the illicit substances were seized.
