Parliamentary staff in several Nigerian states, including Oyo, Edo, Kano, Ondo, and Ogun, have commenced an indefinite strike, shutting down the gates leading to their respective Houses of Assembly. This nationwide strike follows the expiration of the ultimatum given to the Federal Government by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) for the implementation of financial autonomy in legislative houses across the country.

The legislative staff are demanding the implementation of financial autonomy for state legislatures, in compliance with Section 121 (3a, 3b, and 4a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). They also seek the adoption of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structures (CONLESS) for Assembly staff. PASAN’s commitment to the strike is clear, and they are determined to continue until their demands are met.

Financial autonomy for the legislature is a constitutional matter, and it was passed by the National Assembly and assented to by former President Muhammadu Buhari. However, the delay in implementing this autonomy by state governments has prompted the strike action, with PASAN emphasizing the importance of parliamentary independence and its role in deepening the dividends of democracy for Nigerians.
