The factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Eddison Ehie, reportedly narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on his life and that of his family. The incident, which occurred around 11 pm on Sunday, 19th November 2023, involved a group of armed thugs accompanied by rogue police officers, all allegedly intent on carrying out the assassination.

A statement released on the platform of Legislative correspondents in the state detailed the harrowing attack, describing the assailants as fully armed and with a clear mission to eliminate Ehie and his family.

Eddison Ehie, a former leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, has been embroiled in a series of controversies. His recent suspension by the current Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, and endorsed by 24 members of the House, followed a fire incident that occurred on 29th October 2023, damaging the Hallowed Chamber.

The suspension came in the wake of accusations by fellow colleagues, who alleged that Ehie and four other members masterminded the fire that engulfed the Assembly. On the same day, the House attempted to impeach Governor Siminialayi Fubara, but the process was thwarted by the governor’s supporters.

In a bold move, Ehie declared himself the Speaker of the House during a press conference at the Rivers State Government House on the same day he was suspended. He also announced the suspension of the embattled Speaker, Amaewhule, and other unnamed members, further escalating the political crisis.

The roots of the turmoil are believed to extend beyond the House, with speculations that the former Governor of the state and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, might be orchestrating the chaos.

Efforts to reach out to Ehie for comments on the recent assassination attempt have proven unsuccessful, as his phone lines remain inaccessible. Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command is yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, leaving the public in suspense as the political drama unfolds.
