Bola Tinubu’s dictatorial tendencies have led the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), USA chapter, to draw comparisons between him and the late General Sani Abacha.
The claim was made by NADECO Executive Director Mr. Lloyd Ugwu at a recent virtual speech on X (formerly Twitter).
Nigeria’s leading pro-democracy organisation, NADECO, was established following the invalidation of the June 12, 1993, election, which MKO Abiola had won.
The Goal Is To Flush Out Bola Ahmed Tinubu Before 2027” – NADECO
Upholding democracy, the rule of law, responsible government, and accountability in Nigeria has always been the group’s main objective.
During General Sani Abacha’s harsh rule in 1994, Mr. Ugwu outlined the establishment of NADECO in the United States during his speech. Due to persecution, several of its members had left Nigeria; some had even been killed or imprisoned.
When NADECO was founded in the US in 1993, Mr. Ugwu, who was the general council at the time, stressed that the organization’s objective was to remove General Abacha, who had unlawfully taken power.
In 2023, Mr. Ugwu claims that NADECO’s objective is still the same.
But now it’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a civilian leader, instead of a military ruler.

Mr. Ugwu claims that Tinubu, who participated in the 1993 uprising against Abacha, has somehow found himself in a situation where he is comparable to the late dictator.
Similar to General Abacha, he charged Tinubu with illegitimately and illegally taking over the presidency.
Mr. Ugwu proclaimed NADECO’s will to make sure that history is repeated, saying the organisation is ready to remove Tinubu just as they did Abacha.
He also disagreed with the notion of holding off on firing Tinubu until after the elections in 2027 or 2031.
